Our History

Cromwells, a grade II listed building, was converted from two dilapidated cottages in 1987, and officially opened as a Restaurant and Tea Room in 1988.

Located on Mauds Yard, an ancient alleyway off Market Place, the restaurant is placed over two floors with much of the building boasting exposed Victorian brick and sandstone believed to be from the ruins of Pontefract Castle.

Our Restaurant

The restaurant is split over two floors with our more formal dining area upstairs. Whilst Cromwells is a relatively small venue, we can accommodate pushchairs and wheelchairs downstairs, depending on capacity.

Our intimate upstairs restaurant comfortably seats 26 and is perfect for private events/exclusive use.

Please note that toilets are located upstairs and we are unable to accept dogs due to the size of the restaurant. Assistant dogs are, of course, welcome.

Our Kitchen

The heart of Cromwells is our kitchen; we believe in serving quality home-cooked food and our diverse menu caters for all tastes.

Whether its a hearty big breakfast, pie of the day, homemade fishcakes, afternoon tea or simply a coffee and cake, we're sure there would be something for all to enjoy.

We also cater for dietary requirements; we do take care not to cross-contaminate there may be traces of nuts, gluten and other known allergens in our meals as our entire menu is produced in the same kitchen.

Our Team

Our restaurant is a family run business and you will see Calvin or Neil on site most days.

However, we know and appreciate that our success lies in the hands of our amazing Front of House team who provide the warm welcome to our customers and our fabulous kitchen staff who cook every meal with care and pride.

In April 2022, we became a Real Living Wage Employer as we believe a hard days work deserves a fair days pay.
